I've posted a video before of this chaps older brother but this little fella is just great. Melvin The Traveling Mini Machine is a mini Rube Goldberg-style machine that takes 38 steps to put a stamp on a postcard. Created by HeyHeyHey.

Coffee with your laser cutting sir?

So in Shibuya Japan there's a cafe when you can laser cut and make things while you sit and drink a brew! I think this is a pretty nice idea especially for etching graphics and cutting smaller items whilst meeting similar minded folk. I think there's a real future for Fablabs as a pay as you go service and wish one would open up near to me. I guess in the mean time I'll just have to start building my own.

Being a fan of the folder I thought this look inside the Brompton factory in London was great. Just look at those welding jigs. Amazing stuff.

ShapeOko CNC machine

 

The ShapeOko is a desktop CNC machine that is completely open source and designed to be build for $300. Although it is clearly intended for small parts this would be a great tool for model making with a Dremel attachment or a cutting blade for vinyl work. I'll be keeping a close eye on this!

The idea behind it is to get designers, model makers, artists and creatives to push the process and create great things. At £225 it looks like a great addition to any small studio. DIYLILCNC

The DIYLILCNC project is a set of plans for an inexpensive, fully functional 3-axis CNC mill that can be built by an individual with basic shop skills and tool access for about £500. Looks like a great project for the future. Link

Jointmaker Pro Saw

I'm pretty impressed by this. It looks particularly good at cutting little fiddly bits for model making. I want one!

Yes we're going to use a salty wet conductive all beef frank! This is amazing technology I just hope it doesn't encourage complacency.

Model Maker Giovanni Sacchi's Workshop

Looks a bit tidy but I guess that's because it's now a museum. Giovanni Sacchi made models for some pretty famous designers and architects including, aldo rossi, vico magistretti, enzo mari, achille castiglioni, ettore sottsass and marco zanuso. Link

The RapMan

Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Manufacturing has always been a process pretty far removed from a designers workspace but the RapMan could put an end to that. Costing an amazing £750 this self build Rapid Prototyping machine would surely make a nice addition to any designers toolkit. link
