Andrew Ainsworth aka Mr Stormtrooper

Andrew Ainsworth is a Model Maker who recently won a court battle against Lucasfilm to continue to produce Star Wars helmets using the tools he made to produce the originals for the films. His YouTube channel goes into great detail to show you how these are made. Although this is probably quite dull for most people I found it amazing how every piece is a relatively simple vacformed part. Great work.

This is quite incredible. Chris Burden is an artist specialising in kinetic sculpture and "Metropolis II" is his latest piece consisting of 1200 Hot Wheels cars and some very impressive engineering. Love it!

Shot entirely on the new Nokia N8, the film 'Dot' is a collaboration between Aardman and Sumo Science directors Will Studd and Ed Patterson. It has officially set a Guinness World Record for the “smallest stop-motion animation character ever used in a film”. The making of is a lovely peek behind the scenes showing you exactly how it was created. Brilliant.

3D Printed Animation

As 3D printing or Rapid Prototyping technologies progress and become cheaper they seem to be being adapted and used in ways in which they were never initially intended. Animation is one such industry that has adapted this technology. It was first truly exploited during the making of Coraline. Check out these two videos.

Amy Bennett creates miniature 3D models of suburban scenes to serve as still lifes from which to paint. The results are pretty unique looking and at first glance it's hard to tell if they're photos, models or paintings. link

It tells the story of unemployed 28 year old Dave Peck who buys a book on the meaning of life. In his struggle to share his find with the world, Dave's surreal path crosses with those of his unusual neighbors.

Evols Buildings

I recently came across German artist Evol. Evols buildings project takes street objects and transforms them into model buildings by sticking printed transparent paper over them. My favorites are where miniture graffiti has been included at the buildings bases. more can be seen here.

Lori Nix

Lori Nix is an artist who bends the line between truth and illusion in her photographs. She accomplishes this by photographing miniatures and models which illuminate her interest in the disaster movies of the 1970s and her memories of growing up in Kansas. link

Chris Gilmour makes 1:1 scale models of everyday objects from nothing but cardboard, glue, paint and tape. His attention to detail is pretty amazing. More images available here.
