The Making of 'Aufschwung'

 

The other day I stumbled across the website of Heavy Industries who specialize in large scale installations. One of their recent projects was Inges Idee's 'Aufschwun', A spiraling extruded cherub sculpture. Having worked on a number of public art pieces it was great to see behind the scenes of just how this thing was made. Link

The Amazing Work of Chris Burden

 

This is quite incredible. Chris Burden is an artist specialising in kinetic sculpture and "Metropolis II" is his latest piece consisting of 1200 Hot Wheels cars and some very impressive engineering. Love it!

The Land Of Giants

The Land of Giants by Choi + Shine architects are amazingly impressive. All built from the same generic components they make for a stunning and epic addition to their surrounding environment. I think it just goes to show that if we look at what is around us with new and creative eyes then we can start to make things that people appreciate and don't just take for granted. Link

Harvest by Haroshi

These works by Haroshi just blew me away. The re-use of a skateboard ply looks amazing with the highly lacquered finish. I'm guessing that they've been machined using a 5-axis CNC as they look pretty near perfect. Amazing work. Link

Big Pecker

This giant woodpecker is an exact scaled up replica of the small toys that peck their way down poles. This version was designed by Aitken and Hodge to be used on lamp posts. Brilliant!

Ron van der Ende

Ron van der Ende is a sculptor living in Rotterdam. He specializes in wall mounted bas-reliefs constructed from found wood. The pieces can end up looking almost photo-realistic or like they have been photo-shopped onto their surroundings due to their cleaver use of perspective. It's hard to believe that they are all made from scraps. Amazing. Link

It reminds me a little of the scrap wood furniture of another Dutchman, Piet Hein Eek. Link

Tales of Space and Time

Heather Peak and Ivan Morison have created some amazing pieces of work. Often blurring the lines between Sculpture, Architecture and Design they make pieces inspired by post apocalyptic survivalism. Shown above is 'Tales of Space and Time' a Converted Bedford Green Goddess containing a stove, pot plants and a library of apocalypse-themed fiction. Link

Jasper Knight's Apache Helicopter

There's something really nice about work inspired by toys and games from childhood and Jasper Knight's amazing sculpture of a 1:2 scale Apache assault helicopter is no exception. It's made from birch plywood and measures nearly 6 meters in length. Link
